Winning the Battle Within: Taking Every Thought Captive

Saturday, August 05, 2023

Introduction:

In the journey of faith, Christians face a constant battle within their minds. The Bible verse from 2 Corinthians 10:5 serves as a powerful reminder of the spiritual warfare we encounter daily. This verse urges believers to confront and capture every thought that opposes the knowledge of God, striving to make our minds obedient to Christ. In this blog post, we will explore the significance of this verse and delve into practical ways to apply its wisdom in our lives.

  1. Understanding the Spiritual Battle: The battlefield of the mind is an unseen yet crucial aspect of our Christian walk. Thoughts and ideologies that oppose God's truth can easily take root, leading us away from the path of righteousness. Recognizing this spiritual battle is the first step toward gaining victory over negative thoughts and embracing God's wisdom.

  2. Guarding Our Minds: Taking every thought captive requires active vigilance. We need to be mindful of the media, conversations, and influences we expose ourselves to, ensuring they align with biblical principles. Filtering our thoughts through the lens of Christ's teachings enables us to discern right from wrong and nurture a God-centered mindset.

  3. The Power of God's Word: Scripture is a powerful weapon in the battle for our minds. Regularly immersing ourselves in God's Word equips us with the truth and knowledge we need to stand firm against opposing ideas. Meditating on Scripture and memorizing key verses empowers us to counter negative thoughts with God's promises.

  4. Prayer and Surrender: Prayer is our lifeline to God, and it plays a vital role in capturing our thoughts for Christ. Through prayer, we can surrender our anxieties, doubts, and temptations to God, seeking His guidance and strength to navigate challenging situations. Cultivating a consistent prayer life helps us draw closer to God and experience His peace amidst the chaos of daily life.

  5. Community and Accountability: Surrounding ourselves with a supportive Christian community can be instrumental in our spiritual growth. Sharing our struggles and triumphs with fellow believers fosters a sense of accountability and encouragement. Together, we can pray for one another, offer counsel, and provide a safe space for open discussions.

  6. Renewing the Mind: Transforming our minds is an ongoing process. As we focus on capturing every thought for Christ, we must also let go of old mindsets and habits that hinder our spiritual growth. Embracing a mindset of humility, grace, and love allows God to shape us into the image of Christ continually.

Conclusion: The Bible verse from 2 Corinthians 10:5 serves as a powerful call to arms in the spiritual battle for our minds. By taking every thought captive and aligning it with Christ's teachings, we can experience a deeper intimacy with God and grow in our faith. Guarding our minds, meditating on God's Word, and cultivating a strong prayer life are essential components of this transformative journey. As we lean on our Christian community for support and accountability, we will find strength to overcome the obstacles that stand between us and a closer walk with God. Let us embrace the challenge of capturing every thought for Christ, knowing that in doing so, we are laying the foundation for a victorious and purposeful life of faith.

Andy Stanley: Enemies of the Heart - “The Simmering Volcano”

Saturday, January 26, 2019

Scripture: Matthew 15:1-20
Our tendency is to monitor our behavior while pretty much ignoring our hearts. After all, how do you monitor your heart? I can’t get too far off base in my behavior without somebody drawing it to my attention. But my heart? That seems a bit more complicated.
Jesus said something that still has huge implications today: “The things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart,” and then, “Out of the heart come evil thoughts.”
The heart is such a mystery. In fact, one prophet asked of the heart, “Who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9). Good question. The implication is that nobody can. With which I readily concur. And even if we do begin to understand it, we certainly can’t control it—which is all the more reason we need to learn to monitor it. Like the seismic activity of a dormant volcano, what you don’t know can hurt you.
Suddenly someone files for divorce.
Suddenly a kid’s grades drop and his attitude changes.
Suddenly a harmless pastime becomes a destructive habit.
Out of nowhere devastating words pierce the soul of an unsuspecting loved one.
We’ve all seen it, felt it, even caused it. Just as Jesus predicted, what originates in the secrecy of our hearts won’t always remain a secret. Eventually it finds its way into our homes, offices, and neighborhoods.
The heart seeps into every conversation. It dictates every relationship. Our very lives emanate from the heart. We live, parent, lead, relate, romance, confront, react, respond, instruct, manage, problem solve, and love from the heart. Our hearts impact the intensity of our communication. Our hearts have the potential to exaggerate our sensitivities and insensitivities. Every arena of life intersects with what’s going on in our hearts. Everything passes through on its way to wherever it’s going. Everything.
We need the courage to ask the heavenly Father for help to watch over, understand, and purify our hearts. He is eager to respond and to show us how to replace old bad habits of the heart with new and better ones that will in time make us more like his Son.
In the next four days of these devotionals, we’ll be looking at four enemies of the heart that everyone faces.
What do your recent thoughts, words, and actions reveal about what’s going on in your heart? Ask someone close to you for his or her opinion about this as well.

John 11:25-26

Saturday, April 19, 2014

“You don’t have to wait for the End. I am, right now, Resurrection and Life. The one who believes in me, even though he or she dies, will live. And everyone who lives believing in me does not ultimately die at all. Do you believe this?”

John 6:35 - Jesus our Lord is the Bread of Life

Monday, February 25, 2013

And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. (John 6:35 KJV)

What I've learned about this verse is that, no matter what you do as long as you put Jesus our God in it you will never be abandoned by God. He will always be there for you, to guide you to make the things run smoothly.

I remembered when I have been working hard and because I was so busy that I forgot about God. Yes I have been receiving a good pay but I completely forgotten God. Then I realized that with my work I always feel tired, I cannot concentrate on every day that I am doing my job. My salary went to nothing because I spent them with nothing. Nothing in the sense that it never satisfies me.

You may think that I was enjoying every stuff I bought with the pay I received, you may think that I am satisfied with the food I ate at the fancy restaurant then pretend that I didn't see those street children on the road without something to eat.

I was wrong to forgot God in my life everyday, I was so selfish to not remember Him during my abundant days and then only calls Him during my down moment.

Now, I just realized that we need to put God always in our everyday lives. With Him everyday will seem to be very light, so happy, so content I am. By having God everyday will make you safe in what you do. Having God will teach you and guide you to do good. Having God will make everything perfect.

So, just call on Him and live a life with Jesus and he will guide you. There is nothing impossible with the Lord. Call upon Him and you will never get hungry or thirsty. Always live your life with our Lord God and you will realize that life is not so complicated at all.

This, rather, is the fasting that I wish. - Isaiah 58:6

Thursday, February 14, 2013

We should not just look at our personal sins and repent of them, but we should also examine the structures of our society. We should eliminate those that do not facilitate the respect of human dignity, and replace them with those that will. Structural sin may not be easily changed, but that does not mean we should give in to it. We need to work against all sin in the world, doing what we can where we can.

Isaiah 58:1-9
1 Thus says the Lord God: Cry out full-throated and unsparingly, lift up your voice like a trumpet blast; tell my people their wickedness, and the house of Jacob their sins. 2 They seek me day after day, and desire to know my ways, like a nation that has done what is just and not abandoned the law of their God; they ask me to declare what is due them, pleased to gain access to God. 3 Why do we fast, and you do not see it? Afflict ourselves, and you take no note of it?” Lo, on your fast day you carry out your own pursuits, and drive all your laborers. 4 Yes, your fast ends in quarreling and fighting, striking with wicked claw. Would that today you might fast so as to make your voice heard on high! 5 Is this the manner of fasting I wish, of keeping a day of penance that a man bow his head like a reed, and lie in sackcloth and ashes? Do you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord? 6 This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke; 7 sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own. 8 Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your wound shall quickly be healed; your vindication shall go before you, and the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. 9 Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer, you shall cry for help, and he will say, “Here I am!”

Dear God, I pray that my spiritual discipline and obedience to my religious obligations lead me to the point of it all — to love You and others more. Amen.

St. Claude la Colombiere, pray for us.

Jars of Clay - Love Song for a Savior with Lyrics

Thursday, February 12, 2009

In open fields of wild flowers,
she breathes the air and flies away
She thanks her Jesus for the daises and the roses
in no simple language
Someday she'll understand the meaning of it all
He's more than the laughter or the stars in the heavens
As close a heartbeat or a song on her lips
Someday she'll trust Him and learn how to see Him
Someday He'll call her and she will come running
and fall in His arms and the tears will fall down and she'll pray,

"I want to fall in love with You"

Sitting silent wearing Sunday best
The sermon echoes through the walls
A great salvation through it calls to the people
who stare into nowhere, and can't feel the chains on their souls

He's more than the laughter or the stars in the heavens
As close a heartbeat or a song on our lips
Someday we'll trust Him and learn how to see Him
Someday He'll call us and we will come running
and fall in His arms and the tears will fall down and we'll pray,

"I want to fall in love with You"

It seems too easy to call you "Savior",
Not close enough to call you "God"
So as I sit and think of words I can mention
to show my devotion

"I want to fall in love with You"

"my heart beats for You

SAVING GRACE - HILLSONG with lyrics

Night and day I seek Your Face
Long for You in the secret place
All I want in this life
Is to truly know You more

As the waters cover the sea
So Your love covers me
Guiding me on roads unkown
I trust in You alone

CHORUS:
My Saving Grace
My endless love
Deeper and deeper I'm falling in love with You
My one desire
My only truth
Deeper and deeper I'm falling in love with You

And I will rise on wings of eagles
Soaring high above all my fears
I rest in Your open Arms of Love

Who am I lyrics

Who am I, that the Lord of all the earth
Would care to know my name
Would care to feel my hurt
Who am I, that the bright and morning star
Would choose to light the way
For my ever wandering heart

Not because of who I am
But because of what You've done
Not because of what I've done
But because of who You are

CHORUS:
I am a flower quickly fading
Here today and gone tomorrow
A wave tossed in the ocean
Vapor in the wind
Still You hear me when I'm calling
Lord, You catch me when I'm falling
And You've told me who I am
I am Yours, I am Yours

Who am I, that The Eyes that see my sin
Would look on me with love
And watch me rise again
Who am I, that The Voice that calmed the sea
Would call out through the rain
And calm the storm in me
